Who needs one

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says that if you hunt migratory waterfowl and are 16 or older, you must buy and carry a current Federal Duck Stamp or E-Stamp. The Service says to sign your stamp if you use it for hunting.

When it is valid

The Service says Federal Duck Stamps are valid from July 1 through the following June 30.

Where the money goes

The Service says over 98% of the money raised goes to help acquire wetlands and conservation easements for the National Wildlife Refuge System.

Where to buy

The Service says stamps are sold at many sporting goods and other retail stores, at many national wildlife refuges, and online as an E-Stamp.

State rules too

A federal stamp does not replace state licenses or permits. Check your state wildlife agency's current regulations.

FAQ

Yes. The Service says anyone can buy one to support conservation.

General information only. Hunting laws, seasons, licenses, and hunter orange rules are set by each state; check your state wildlife agency's current regulations before you hunt, and take the hunter education course your state offers. If you hunt from a tree stand, wear a full-body fall arrest harness system every time you leave the ground, including while climbing up and down, follow the Treestand Manufacturers Association's Treestand Safety Guidelines and the maker's instructions, and have a plan for rescue. Tell someone where you will be and when you will return. In an emergency, call 911.
